Elder Athletes and Coaches Recognized as Enquirer 2016 Winter All Stars

A veritable plethora of Elder players and coaches from the winter sports season were recognized by The Cincinnati Enquirer on their list of 2016 Winter All Stars.  Congratulations to all!  Altiora!

Basketball

First team: Frankie Hofmeyer

Frankie Hofmeyer, Elder: The senior was co-GCL-South player of the year and first-team all-league. Was the second leading scorer in the league at 17.6 for the 19-5 Panthers. Also was fourth in the league in steals.

Second team: Joey Sabato

Joey Sabato, Elder: The senior was first-team all-GCL-South. Led the league in assists with 5.4 per game and steals with 2.4.

Honorable Mention: Peyton Ramsey

Bowling

Coach of the Year: Dave Sievers

Dave Sievers, ElderLed the Panthers to sectional championship at Crossgate Lanes and a 13th-place district tournament finish.

Second Team: Ethan Winkler

Ethan Winkler,Elder: The junior led the Panthers with a 207.7 average and series high of 504. Was second-team all-Greater Catholic League-South.

Honorable Mention: Jake Bailey

Hockey

Player of the Year: Ron Larkin

Ron Larkin, Elder: 

Junior led Elder in scoring again this season with 24 goals and 35 assists, for 59 points in 35 games. The 35 assists were a program high for one season. Is the all-time assist leader at Elder. Set another school record with two goals and five assists in one game. Was the captain of the Panthers, and his leadership played a big part in guiding Elder to its first 20-win season.

Coach of the Year: Joe Del Prince

Joe Del Prince, Elder: The coach since 2009-10, when the Panthers switched from club to varsity, guided the team to 20 wins, which is the most wins in a season in school history.

First Team: Ron Larkin, Matt Wall, Charlie Garnett, Jacob Henn

Ron Larkin, Elder: Player of the year.

Matt Wall, Elder: Senior forward had 24 goals and 23 assists.

Charlie Garnett, Elder: Sophomore defenseman led Elder with 28 goals. Also recorded 21 assists.

Jacob Henn, Elder: Sophomore goalie had 13 wins for the year. His save percentage was 89.8 overall and 91 in league play.

Second Team:  Mike Wynn, Matt Mahon

Mike Wynn, Elder: Junior defenseman had 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points.

Matt Mahon, Elder: Sophomore centered Elder’s most productive line. Excellent passer with great vision had 20 goals with 23 assists.

Honorable Mention:  Bobby Wynn, Josh Antone, Jacob Hofmeyer, Stan Groszek

Wrestling

First Team:  Austin Murphy (126 lbs), Ti’Ric Evans (170 lbs)

126–Austin Murphy, Elder: With a 42-8 record, he placed sixth at state, runner-up at districts and won sectional and GCL South titles.

170–Ti’Ric Evans, Elder: With a 42-4 season, he was a district, sectional and GCL South champion.

Second Team: Robby Oswald (160 lbs)

160–Robby Oswald, Elder: Qualified to state after placing runner-up at districts. Was second-team all-GCL South.

Honorable Mention:  Chucky Lipps (120 lbs), Nino Salamone (132 lbs), Jake Meredieth (138 lbs), Sam Williams (145 lbs), Antonio McCloud (182 lbs)
