Eric’s nomination for the 2015 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award:
Since entering the NFL in 2009, Buffalo Bills center Eric Wood has made a positive impact in the community and exemplifies the qualifications of the Walter Payton Man of the Year. During his tenure with the Bills, Eric’s contagious sense of team pride has spanned from the locker room to the field. Voted a team captain during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Wood has started in all 86 games he played in during his career. In 2011, he anchored an offensive line that allowed a league-low 23 sacks and helped a Bills team that led the AFC with a 4.9 yard per rush average.
Off the field, Eric has been a strong advocate for many of the initiatives the Bills and the NFL support – including PLAY 60, Breast Cancer Awareness, Salute to Service and overall community health and wellness. Wood has actively participated in PLAY 60 events, including the Bills PLAY 60 Fitness Party and PLAY 60 school visits. Each October, Eric has played a key role in the Bills’ annual Billieve event to promote breast cancer awareness and assist in promotional efforts to support the cause. In addition, the Bills organization counts on Eric for a number of other events, including community group visits during training camp, Thanksgiving food drives with the Food Bank of WNY and participating in the Bills Holiday Party for Children. Eric also helped launch the Offensive Line Holiday Party, which provides an evening of dinner and shopping for 30 teenage boys from United Way of Buffalo & Erie County around the holiday season.
In 2014 he launched “The Eric Wood Foundation,” which has a very personal mission to him and his family. The goal of the foundation is to provide seriously ill, special needs and physically challenged children throughout the Greater Buffalo area with daily encouragement and life changing experiences. Eric has hosted a number of local events to help raise funds, which have been heavily supported by several of his teammates. Eric, a community and family man at heart, has been a player the Bills have relied on to be a key community figure. He has paved a way into the heart of the Western New York community by being a prominent, respectable and positive role model for Bills fans young and old. For these reasons, and many more, the Buffalo Bills are proud to nominate Eric Wood for the 2015 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
